BILGE PUMP are seriously good: I don’t stand a chance of doing them justice in words, but try to imagine a boiling-over bastard concoction of all the best bits of The Jesus Lizard, Led Zepplin, The Fall, Blue Cheer, Funkadelic and King Crimson. A thick broth of art-punk fractured progressive noise, condensed into atonal pop songs free of power chords. The twisted guitar and flubbery solos sound like Robert Fripp on crack cocaine. Nitro-fuelled avant-jazz rhythms create enough structural form amongst the refreshingly sozzled riffology and off-the-cuff witicisms to provide an uncanny ability to incite dancing! It doesn’t matter how wired or weird Bilge Pump get; behind the progressive noise there are clear, distinctive, memorable songs: a rare and winning combination! Formed in the murky depths of the mid 90s, it didn’t take too long for the NME to churn out their now infamous declaration that Bilge Pump are “unlistenable guff”; so far, so good. It took them 7 years to produce their first album, ‘Let Me Breathe’, released by Gringo in 2002. It has taken another 5 years for their second record to arrive, and arrive it will, right here, at Babi-CHIN! Yup, despite already having 12 bands on the bill, when we found out that 1st December is the release date for ‘Rupert The Sky’, Bilge Pump’s second album in their 12 year existence, we couldn’t resist squealing like little children in a sweet shop begging for more! Bilge Pump have probably played with, dismayed and blown away all your favourite bands. They will probably make you want to quit playing music, but you’ll get over it. They probably haven’t done an interview in a magazine for you to read. But they probably are the best thing you’ve ever heard, and if you haven’t heard them, they probably are the best thing you’ve never heard, and if you’ve never heard them, you probably should, and here’s your chance! www.myspace.com/bilgepump - www.gringorecords.com/bilgepump.htm

A.P.A.T.T - witness the all-encompassing brilliance of liverpool’s “every-wave” obsessive compulsives, chewing up elements of every musical genre you ever heard (and a few you haven’t), carefully and carelessly churning them into new, unrecognisable, magnificent shapes. Pure genius. L.P and CD available soon on Chinchilla records. A.p.a.t.t also have releases planned for both pickled egg and Class A audio…..and a DVD….busy kids. www.apatt.com

GAY AGAINST YOU - gay against you are the enthusiastic, messy and very, very friendly duo of lachlann rattray and joe howe, who inhabit the middle ground between cyndi lauper and the locust. Gay against you go daft mental when playing so watch yer pints etc…..i like what terrorizer magazine said about them muchly….’a council estate butthole surfers’. Hopefully they won’t draw on floor with crayons….’cause nathan will be pissed. www.myspace.com/gayagainstyou

SOEZA - soeza are stupid good and anyone who has seen them knows this. Once bristol based but now scattered all about, soeza occasionally make the trip up north and play chinchillafest and this makes us happy. ‘They number many, blow french horns like a stupidly cute Sweep The Leg Johnny, and craft post-something songs - guitars chop-chop rather than riff themselves into dust - that are both instantly catchy and charming in the longer term’. On Gringo records. www.myspace.com/soeza

AMBULANCE - ambulance are from Liverpool and like to fiddle with all sorts of musical sounds and styles to craft bold, anthemic songs. This is what the Times said about them “shambolic, unpredicatable, fond of bugles, megaphones and theremins – ambulance’s chaotic live shows and ability to veer from the bizarre to brilliant in a nanosecond have assured them “they could be legends” status.” which is very complimentary. I think they are smart and i’ve not known them to play here in Leeds so it’ll be a reet treat for us all. On Sea records.

HANDS ON HEADS - Hands On Heads are a dysfunctional pop group from London. They play scatter beat indie pop in a confused and righteous manner that i like alot. They have records out on Upset the rhythm records. www.myspace.com/handsonheads

SAILORS - sailors formed awhile back here in Leeds. They have played 34 gigs to date, they may play some more soon. I’m assured they will be playing BABI-CHIN so thats definately 35 and counting……sailors made a 7″ single for Gringo records and it is good. www.myspace.com/wearesailors

TATTIE TOES - Violin, drums, bass and vocals four piece from Glasgow. Drummer Shane originates from the city, while vocalist Nerea is from the Basque country, bassist Howie (Maxton Grainger) is from Bolton, and violinist Rafe is a Welsh lad. Their music is an awe inspiring mix of each members distinct musical sensibility and dexterity. Howie and Shane’s rhythms swing, twang, rattle and shift in all manner of directions in an avant garde spirit, but they are essentially about hooking the listener with their haunting folk. Rafe’s violin is a mixture of melody and effects from different ethnic and folk tradtions, and Nerea brings Basque wildness, beauty and stiring dance and performance.

LINE - line are from bristol and consist of members of Soeza and Surgery or the Bomb. They play lush, almost acoustic post-ish rock in the vein of Town and Country, Pullman and pinback. They play in leeds occasionally (usual at a chinchillafest) and always amaze. You’ll like them alot and you will thank me for putting them on and i will try not to be smug about it. www.line.pullthestrings.co.uk

CISSY - cissy is a shiny brand new band dressed in red and with red things, and features a drummer who played in The Dragon Rapide and also features a guitar player from the bands Tigers! and Beards. They play post-funk / Afrobeat songs on guitars, drums, keyboards, and small percussion things, influenced by bands like The Meters, 5ivestyle, Heroic Doses, Can, Fela Kuti, Euphone and The JBs. They just honed their art with a Euro tour with Origami (who frequently rock the USA with bands like Le Tigre, Electrelane, etc), and will be playing with James Chance from The Contortions! Hell Yeah! Thumbs Up! www.myspace.com/cissysound

COWTOWN - cowtown play short, hi-octane thrill pop songs, with guitars like Jeremy Jacobsen in Devo-mode, wild pulsing synths, and pounding super-tight drumness. Cowtown’s debut album ‘pine-cone express’ out on Chinchilla-tone/GoldenLabs/On the bone records any time now. Cowtown will be opening this event with style and finesse. Cowtown hope to see you down the front. www.myspace.com/cowtownsuperstars. www.chinchillaweb.co.uk/cowtown

Bullshit free DJ sets throughout the day from RANDOM NUMBER the FUNDER ENTOURAGE. I encourage you all to have fun, and if that means heavy drinking, then so be it. Thanks.

Any profit made from this event will be donated to the worlds finest club….The Brudenell Social Club is a vital space in the heart of LS6, with far more to it than the immediately striking Phoenix Night’s style decor. It provides space for various sections from the local community to relax together, and provides a welcoming home to a wide variety of locally based entertainment and international acts alike. The Entertainments Committee have raised well over £10,000 for sound proofing, and recently acquired funding of a further £10,000 from the Lottery. We are keen to raise extra finances to pay for a few more essentials that the funding does not cover. If you’re not already a member of the Brudenell Social Club, please remember to keep a couple of extra quid on you to join. To find out more visit www.brudenellsocialclub.co.uk
