Hyde Park Unity Day

by circuit | Print the article

“Hyde Park Unity Day is a unique day… it gives people who would not normally have the chance to be involved in such a big event a chance to try their hand at organising, creating, communicating, interacting, learning, co-ordinating, inspiring at a grass roots level. The day has its own special magic created by the people involved and the energy they commit freely for the benefit of community spirit. The definition of community being: caring for people close to you.”

The annual Hyde Park Unity Day festival takes place this Saturday from mid-day onwards on Woodhouse Moor in Leeds 6. This year there are stages run by Cloth Cat, Oxjam, and the Burley Lodge Theatre, bingo and cakes in the Memory Lane tent, yoga, kids play groups, football and cricket tournaments, talent shows, graffiti workshops, stalls and soundsystems throughout the park and skate ramps until 10pm. The dog show has the usual 3pm slot with Melanie and the usual gaggle of giddy 7 year olds.

If you want a taster of how much fun Unity Day is, check out this video of Bilge Pump headlining the main stage in 2007:

More info can be found on the Unity Day website at www.unityday.org.uk or on The Culture Vulture.
